Stuart is a prolific, popular and extremely highly regarded TV and radio presenter, journalist, columnist and best-selling author. He is on BBC Radio 6 Music every weekend with Mark Radcliffe. He regularly appears on TV screens and has written a variety of books including the best-selling Pies and Prejudice, and its sort of sequel, The Pie At Night, examining the modern north.
In 2017, he retraced the Jarrow march, in real time, to mark its 80th anniversary. The book of his walk, The Long Road from Jarrow, was published by Ebury Press. His most recent book, The Nanny State Made Me, also Ebury Press, examines the British welfare state through his own personal experiences of growing up in the North.
